The Intermountain west consists of the states Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada and Utah. Although all of these states are well known for for their incredible beauty there are a lot of aspects of this region that most people do not often tour but are certainly worthy of attention. If you have the time and ability then add some of these to your list of activities when you next visit this region.
1. Visit the Mineral Pools- This geological area has a large amount of thermic activity which has resulted in a many soaking hot pools in these states. Springs are as developed or as primitive as one likes. For those that are like simplicity then White Sulfur Springs Hotel is the best place for you. Those that like more of a spa feel, check out some of the thermal springs that Colorado has to offer.
2. Search for Petraglyphs- The archaic Indians of the Mountain west were extremely artistic, and a a lot of there 4000-year old art can persists to this day, painted on rock surfaces across the region. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a interesting trail and museum, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to stop for a visit.
3. Visit the Smaller National Monuments- If you have not visited Yellowstone Park, then by all means you should visit there first, but for people who have experienced the main circuit of parks in the region you might think about visiting the underestimated ones. Cumulatively, these states have over 53 National sites, and most of these states have excellentstate park systems as well.
4. See the Local Museums (as well as the most popular ones)- A lot of the best museums are those that are off the beaten track, like the small museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local citizenry gathered memorabilia from their area spanning a century and a half. Of course, some of the bigger museums are worth stopping by as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody just outside Yellowstone Park. This museum looks into into western history for example Indians of the West or Natural History.
5. Enjoy Awesome Powder- Western summers are famous, but we also have some of the best snow around. For those of you that are not interested in trying snowboarding, you might try x-country skiing. Sun Valley, Idaho has wonderful trails as well as the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF in Montana.
6. Explore a Mountain Lake this summer– The mountains of the western US are full of beautiful alpine lakes. A great many of them are frequently visited but a few of the most most interesting are off the main tourist track and often require a difficult hike to get to. One of our favorite picks is Seneca Lake in the Wind River Mountains. This secluded alpine lake is circled by serated ridges and picturesque mountains that were sculpted by glaciers. The Wind River mnts. are known for fishing and hiking opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the Wind River Mountains is Lonsome lake located near the Cirque of the Towers in the southern section of the Wind River Mountains.
As you can tell, there are a wide variety of things that you can do in the mountain west, instead of the boring car tour. Any of the above iteneraies will not only take you to the heart of the true West but will provide you with many great pictures for years to come.
