What is this Emotional Intelligence that everyone keeps talking about ?
Its strange isn’t it ? The different ideas, concepts and practices that seem to evolve out of nowhere. We read about new things all the time don’t we, about things we really should be aware of, of new ways of doing things, both in our working lives and our everyday lifves new ideas, new Government Policies. It seems like everything is in a constant flux of ‘change’ doesn’t it?
Obviously there are practical and topical issues that are worthy of note. At work there are a plethora of responsibilities, Best Practice Policies, protective Regulations, reviews, etc, in education there are new methods, checks and balances and evolving information sources and studies, and within relationships there are new ideas and concepts to explore.
Once in a while though, something appears from the far horizon that approaches slowly and then gathers momentum. Something that makes ‘real’ sense. Something that touches our very core. Something that ‘flicks’ a switch’ and creates a bright and illuminating light in our life.
Back in 1995 a man called Daniel Goleman wrote a book called Emotional Intelligence. In it he talked about our inner sense, our feelings and emotions, how to recognise our inner-selves and to manage how we interact and interplay with others ~ how we present ourselves with and towards others. He provided such new ideas and concepts. His book became a global best seller. Since that time, Emotional Intelligence has moved on and has been further developed and is spreading throughout all aspects of life. Now, EI is rapidly becoming a vital resource in working practice and technique ~ in management practice ~ and essentially, in life.
Emotional Intelligence or EI is different to what most people recognise when we talk about IQ. IQ means Intelligence Quotient. IQ is the measurable element of our intellect that we are born with. IQ cannot be improved. EI however, is not ‘set in stone’. EI ~ or the measurable element being known as EQ ~ is different inasmuch as it ‘can’ be improved through education, training and personal awareness. Emotional Intelligence is all about our inner-selves and how we behave, how we interact with others, communicate, assess and monitor and how we self-manage [or not] our environments when it comes to relationships of all kinds.
Emotional Intelligence and Awareness is a growing management tool and a personal development resource and one which is spreading rapidly around the world and among every cultural setting. It is so appropriate and applicable in this modern and fast age we live and where self-management and awareness and the management of others [colleagues, staff and customers] are of paramount importance.
It cannot be stressed highly enough the impact that Emotional Intelligence and Awareness will have and has had in so many ways, in our daily lives and with those with whom we interact. As an integral element in management soft skill acuity, Emotional Intelligence is key to improvement, enhancement and development.
